Future Life Plans - Jack

Hello again,

Now we've both talked a great deal about the trail and how to prepare, but I think it's time to talk a little more about myself. Talking about my life is not something that I consider myself very good at, so hang in there! The first thing you need to know about me is how I was introduced to the outdoors. My father is an avid outdoorsman and I have no doubt he is the reason that I have this passion for being outside. When I was little we used to go on a plethora of camping trips. My favorite of these were trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota. Going on these trips taught me everything I needed to know about camping and hiking, as well as about the gear you need to be successful on these trips.

Now enough about the outdoors and on to my academic life. I will be completing my undergraduate studies here in about three weeks! I am receiving a baccalaureate degree in human biology from South Dakota State University. These past four years have been an incredible experience. It's amazing to see how much I've grown and changed during this time. I look back to what I was like during my freshman year of college and cringe! While my years at SDSU have been fun, it was time for a change. This change came in the form of an acceptance to medical school at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM).

VCOM's campus is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, which happens to be where we are starting our hike this summer! (hmmmm I wonder who planned that) Visiting Virginia for my section hike during the summer of 2016 introduced me to the east coast region and made me realize that I would enjoy living there. So I applied to osteopathic school at VCOM knowing they have a strong program. What do you know, I got in! Now all I needed was a little push. I had interviewed for a spot at the University of South Dakota's Sanford School of Medicine in December of 2016, and it was my first choice to attend. I knew if I got in to school this close to home I would attend in a heartbeat. However, I don't think Vermillion, South Dakota is where my heart was at.

In early March I was anxiously awaiting a letter from USD's medical school. Upon opening it I saw that I had been rejected from the program. After the initial shock, I felt more relieved than I have been in years. I knew where I was going, and I finally knew that this was the right decision for me. Fast forward two weeks and I had found an apartment and a room mate, and am currently looking into ways to drag my belongings out to Virginia! While this is going to be a massive change or scenery, and a big leap in my career, I feel prepared and excited to see what my new life has waiting for me. I can't wait to learn all I can about medicine, and look forward to the many years of training leading up to my career.
