Day 19 - Zeroing - Prof
Yesterday was both a really cool and a really annoying hike. I twisted my knee sliding down a rock scramble which didn't hurt initially because I was still climbing for the morning but when we got afternoon the trail went downhill and I began to feel it. I ended up getting into town a couple hours behind everyone else because of my slow pace.
The trail itself was beautiful. There were several stream crossings, a couple waterfalls with swimming holes and some old ruins scattered about. I saw a bunch of deer but just missed the two bears that were on the trail.
The town of Waynesboro is really accommodating to hikers. The list of free shuttles from the trail is longer than the lists of paid shuttles in most towns. They have a nice hiker park that they let us stay in for free and the YMCA allows us to use their showers for free. One thing I really appreciate about the town is that while walking through the lower income neighborhoods I notice that people are still taking good care of their properties. The downtown area looks like it is blooming back alive after having died down. I'm spending the morning at a nice coffee shop with wifi (catching up on a lot of emails, bills, and other things I have been avoiding) and the coffee is perfect. I am talking to the barista and she says that the town is working hard to redevelop the buildings that had been abandoned during the recession.
We are planning on going to the all you can eat Chinese buffet for lunch and doing some resupply shopping in the afternoon. I lost my camp spork so I should get a new one and stop eating with my hands. I think some guys are playing basketball this afternoon, I might join them if my knee is feeling better. We also talked about maybe going to a movie. Overall we are just being lazy. Doc and I are ahead of schedule thanks to our two 20 mile days this week and the big miles we pushed our first week so we can take the opportunity to relax a bit.
Since I am in town and have service today I will be able to answer any questions or catch up with people. Feel free to comment or to message me.
Happy Hump Day!
